British Spy

A British spy was found murdered in his London apartment–shortly after illegally hacking top secret data belonging to former President Bill Clinton.

Gareth Williams, 31, breached his security clearance by hacking into a guest list for an event that Clinton was going to do, according to the UK newspaper, The Sun, which made the shocking claims on Sunday. He apparently did so as a favor to a friend, who was to be a guest of Clinton’s. It’s unclear why his friend wanted the guest list, or what attendee names were contained on the list.

Williams was later found dead, shortly after returning from a hacking conference in the United States. He was last seen on August 15, 2010, and found eight days later in a padlocked duffel bag in the bathtub of his central London apartment.

His case remains unsolved. London police initially assumed he was killed by a jealous lover–but a number of suspicious circumstances, like the fact that his apartment was “steam-cleaned” to destroy DNA evidence, poke holes in that theory. The Sun also revealed that key voicemails left by Williams for friends and family were deleted in the days that followed his murder–and that another spy may have been dispatched to his apartment to help clean up the mess.

The fact that he had recently breached secret Clinton data has only been recently made public knowledge with The Sun’s story.

Police haven’t commented on this new information, since the death of Williams is an ongoing investigation.

While it might be premature to claim that the Clintons were at all involved in Williams’s murder, it nevertheless raises the interesting question: what exactly did Williams discover in the Clintons’ secret data, and was it enough to kill him over?
