Transgender In The White House

There’s something unique about Raffi Freedman-Gurspan, the newest Obama Staffer.

The White House’s incoming Outreach and Recruitment Director for Presidential Personnel is a transgender woman.

Freedman-Gurspan, who was born male but now identifies as female, is in fact the first transgender presidential aid in history.

Considering the Obama Administration’s love of diverse hires, they’re not shying away from the historic aspect of hiring someone like Freedman-Gurspan. Obama’s senior adviser, Valerie Jarrett, for instance, seems to be a big fan of the hire.

Jarrett said:

“Raffi Freedman-Gurspan demonstrates the kind of leadership this Administration champions.”

“Her commitment to bettering the lives of transgender Americans, particularly transgender people of color and those in poverty, reflects the values of this Administration.”

Freedman-Gurspan did not make any comments to the press–but she leaves behind a storied career in her native Massachusetts. She was the first transgender woman working at the Massachusetts State House in Boston.

It remains to be seen what accomplishments Freedman-Gurspan will have in the Obama White House–but it’s clear that they’ll continue to make history during the last few years of the presidency.
